20190726 Calvin Coolidge Slept Here 1927

Last night in Custer State Park, South Dakota before the long drive home.

Our final night was at the State Game Lodge Campground. The State Game Lodge served as the summer White House for Calvin Coolidge in 1927. It also housed Dwight Eisenhower during a speaking engagement in the Badlands. There’s a mighty fine restaurant inside. We only had breakfast there, but the dinner menu looked scrumptious.

This campground wasn’t as much fun as Legion Lake. There’s a small pond with a swimming beach, and a lovely stream with stunning tent sites right alongside. The RV sites were, of course, away from the water and ours was out in the bald sunshine. I took a little photo safari along the stream and played with camera settings on falling water. Later Rick and I took basically the same walk again but with better lighting later in the day.

The restaurant was not really in walking distance in this campground, so we had dinner in the camper and enjoyed the long twilight together. It’s been a wonderful trip, but we’re both ready to head home to our dogs in the morning. Our route tomorrow takes us back out along a couple of miles of the Wildlife Loop, so we’re desperately hoping we’ll get one last chance at that bison herd before we’re out of the park.

Tomorrow morning we’re homeward bound! I can almost taste the dog hair now!
